FIFA World Cup 2010 Review

FIFA made a decision in 1928 to hold a new tournament and on 13th July 1930 it was finally held. The World Cup had been given life. President Jules Rimet’s dream, of bringing teams from around the globe together to one tournament, competing to be crowned champions of the world, was realised.

The first nation to host the World Cup was Uruguay in the year of the country’s centenary celebration of its independence, despite bids from Italy, Sweden, the Netherlands and Spain. Unfortunately, at the time that was quite a distance for anyone outside of America to travel and in the end only 13 nations agreed to take part. Moreover, England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland were actually ineligible for the first World Cup as they had withdrawn from FIFA at the time. There is a rumour that the Uruguayan Football Association sent an invitation to the English FA, but it was rejected nonetheless.

Furthermore, out of the 13 nations attending there were no teams representing Africa or Asia, belittling the claim that it was a ‘World’ tournament. Out of the four groups, Argentina, Yugoslavia, Uruguay and the USA went through, straight into the semi-finals. The semis both finished a thrilling 6-1, with Argentina and the hosts, Uruguay, proceeding to the final full of confidence. The final saw an attendance of around 80,000 people, who also witnessed their first World Cup disagreement. Remember the debate going on through this World Cup about the ball making the game less exciting? Well a similar feud took place in the final of the first World Cup over what match ball to use. To resolve the issue, FIFA decided that it would be Argentina’s choice of ball for the first half and Uruguay’s choice of ball in the second. After the full time whistle had blown the host nation fans were in chaos as they witnessed their home nation win the first World Cup, beating close rivals Argentina 4-2 in the process.

The 2010 World Cup is a very different arena. 32 teams have taken part in the finals alone, never mind the qualifiers, and teams from continents all over the globe, including Africa and Asia have attended. Now nearing the final match of the tournament, tension is high and the pressure is on. The majority of big teams have fallen at one stage or the other, including France, Italy, England, Brazil, Argentina and Portugal. On a financial note, the winner of the 2010 FIFA World Cup gets a hefty $30 million in prize money, whilst the runners up get $20 million, with the total prize money for the tournament amounting to a staggering $420 million. That certainly gives the teams another incentive other than the prestige of winning the World Cup for their respective countries. Don’t miss out on the World Cup Final on 11th July, 2010.

FIFA World Cup 2010 Hit List

The World Cup always brings together the world’s best players for one spectacular tournament and this year will be no different. However after some last minute injuries and some big name exclusions you may find yourself wondering why some players are ‘missing’ from their usual spots.

Ronaldinho. One of the biggest names in Football is the first on the list as a surprising exclusion. Brazil coach Dunga has gone for more youth this year and despite Ronaldinho still showing glimpses of his former self at AC Milan, he apparently did not do enough to warrant a place in Dunga’s 23 man squad. Not only that, a player that will be at the World Cup while Ronaldinho watches from home is none other than Kleberson. Yes remember him. No? Well no surprise. He was that Man Utd reject that nobody talks about. Ronaldinho must be feeling sick.

Who else fell under the axe? Actually a player I believe really warranted his position in the World Cup this year. Javier Zanetti. After a fabulous season, the Inter Milan captain has been left out of the 23 man Argentina squad, despite having lifted three trophies this season. Unfortunately he turns 36 in August and therefore this was most likely his last opportunity to play in the World Cup.

Karim Benzema is another big name left out of the final squad for the World Cup. After a frustrating season at Real Madrid where he received very little time on the field he has gone from young starlet to a ghost in the background. Will he be able to come out of the shadow of players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka at Madrid. It certainly doesn’t look likely at this point.

Patrick Vieira probably thought his switch to Manchester City would help him regain form and fitness enough to be included in the French World Cup Squad. However much to his disappointment it seems that it has done nothing to secure him a place in the final 23 man squad.

Theo Walcott. Surprisingly his exclusion is not a surprise. With so many options on the right wing and very few on the left Fabio Capello was bound to leave out one of either Lennon, Wright-Phillips or Walcott. And with his poor recent performances it’s no wonder that Walcott has taken the hit.

Samir Nasri. Another big name French player to exit the World Cup. Coach Raymond Domenech seems to be adopting a tough approach, even with big name stars, in this World Cup. After some good performances for Arsenal he will probably be a little disappointed, but his age gives him plenty of opportunity to join the World Cup again in the future.

Esteban Cambiasso also misses out this year despite being a part of the treble winning Inter Milan squad and his place is occupied by Mascherano, a player with no silverware this season, who is part of a Liverpool squad that leaked goals far too easily all year. And Maradona’s surprised that Argentina only just scraped through qualification?

Add to that list two veteran strikers in Luca Toni of Italy and Ruud van Nistelrooy of Netherlands and you have list of star cuts. And now with the Kick Off upon us three big names have taken to the sick list. Rio Ferdinand, Michael Essien and Didier Drogba. What a shame that such talents will not be seen in South Africa this summer. Enjoy the football festivities!
