I am going back a long time here, but best to start at the beginning I think. ‘Magician’ is Raymond E. Feist’s classic fantasy epic and the first of his internationally bestselling and critically acclaimed Riftwar series. This book has captured the hearts of readers for over twenty five years and has been revised over and over again in that period.
In Crydee, a small frontier outpost on the world of Midkemia, the orphan boy, Pug, apprentices to a master magician and begins a destiny that will change the fates of not one, but two worlds. Invaders from the new world destroy the peace of the Kingdom and Pug and his soldier friend Tomas are swept up into the conflict. Tomas will inherit a legacy of ancient and savage power and Pug will lead him through a rift in space and time to the mastery of a strange new magic in a fantastical world.
‘Magician’ is a brilliant fantasy novel that is at the top of every list of science fiction books. Not only that, it is the first book in what became Feist’s very own world for the majority of his novels. The world of Midkemia is the setting for many great stories and the Riftwar series is but the first. I will warn you now, though, should you decide to read ‘Magician’ you will most likely keep reading until you have read every single related novel of Feist’s to date. When people say they have a read a book and couldn’t put it down, this book and series go beyond that; you’ll want to read the whole series in one go, it’s that fantastic. My advice if you’re going to start this series is to get all three books at once: ‘Magician’, ‘Silverthorn’ and ‘A Darkness at Sethanon’. I hope you enjoy these books as I have done over the past decade.
